Lookdev

Note

This page assumes that you're using the Lookdev Template shipped with Beacon.

Import

Destructive Workflow

A destructive workflow refers in this instance as using a model coming from another DCC, such as Maya or Blender

In order to import model, you can either do it directly on OBJ level using the promoted parameters on the lookdev subnet, or manually by diving inside it.
You can simply import any model in the purple lookdev_subnet using the Beacon Import File digital asset.
After import, choose a render engine and click on the Update Material button.

Warning

At the moment, only Arnold is supported.

The asset extension will determine if the Alembic folder is enabled or not.

Procedural Workflow

A procedural workflow refers in this instance as using a model coming directly from Houdini

Once the procedural asset is done, you can simply publish it and follow the instructions in the destructive wokrflow part.
Before exporting the asset, make sure it has materials applied through the @shop_materialpath path.

Tip

  • The best practice would be to create empty materials. They can even be principled_shader materials, or anything really.
  • You can simply drop a material node in order to create the @shop_materialpath attribute.

Export

The easiest way to export the lookdev is to create a Houdini digital asset.
It will come with all the dependencies you need in order to be able to render it in a lighting scene.
